All knitting starts with casting on, which is a fancy way of saying “putting stitches on the needle.” And casting on starts with a slip knot.
To make a slip knot, begin by winding off approximately a 4-foot strand of yarn without cutting it from the ball.
Watch the VIDEO or follow the steps illustrated in the images below:
- 1. Form a loop in the middle of the 4-foot strand. Note that one strand sits on top of the other strand.
- 2. Hold the loop in place with one hand. With your free hand, reach through the loop . . .
- 3. . . .and pull up a sencond loop from the strand that’s on top.
- 4. Release the first loop. Pull on the new loop and the end that is not coming from the ball to lightly tighten.
- 5. Place the loop on the needle. Pull both ends to make the loop snug against the needle. Voila! You’ve made your first stitch.
After you’ve made your slip knot, you’re ready to Cast On.
