Cast On « Maggie Pace: From Scratch

You’ve made your slip knot and it is on your needle. That’s your first stitch! Notice there are two ends coming from the slip knot on the needle. The end that is not coming from the ball is called the tail. The end that is connected to the ball is called the live yarn.

Time to cast on! Watch the VIDEO or follow the photo tutorial, below:

: 1. Set up the yarn as shown in the photo: Holding the needle in your right hand, wrap the tail over your left-hand thumb. Catch the tail under your ring and pinky fingers to hold in place. Put the live yarn over the top of your index finger, then between your index and middle fingers. Hold in place by squeezing your index and middle finger together.

: 2. Move the needle to the base of your thumb and insert it under the tail.

: 3. Pull the needle to the right of the live yarn.

: 4. Notice there is a loop coming from your thumb.

: 5. Use the needle to catch the live yarn and pass the needle through the loop.

: 6. Release the thumb loop, and pull both ends to tighten the new stitch on the needle.

: 7. Pull on both ends to tighten the new stitch.

If you aren’t following a pattern, cast on 20 stitches to make a good size practice swatch. Now you are ready to knit.
